About Champion Equine & Rehab Centre
Champion Equine Rehab & Training Centre is a full service facility that provides specialized injury assessment, rehab therapy, conditioning, training, boarding, Ferrier service, chiropractic, equine dentistry and much more. All equipment is safe, clean and run by professionally trained staff. A highly trained veterinarian will diagnose your horse’s injury and provide the appropriate recommendation for recovery and treatment of your equine athlete.
Rehabilitating horses is a full time job. There are times to go slowly with healing and times when healing is facilitated by more controlled work. Stable rest has been one of the most common modalities for an injury; alternatively if you push the injury too quickly you risk extensive setback in the horses return to use. We at Champion Equine Rehab & Training Centre will take all necessary steps with our state of the art equipment to restore range of motion and ensure that your horse does not have a permanently altered gait or reoccurring problem.
Mr. Paul Roy is the owner and head physiologist and trainer at Champion Equine Rehab & Training Centre. Paul’s expertise lies in rehabilitation and athletic conditioning and he has seen numerous horses through full recovery post-injury and has fitted several horses to win at the provincial and national level. To do this, he draws on his extensive background which includes: anatomy; wound healing and immunological response to insult; exercise physiology and adaptation to training; respiratory and cardiac function; and nutrition and energy metabolism. This knowledge is complemented by his hands-on skills (e.g., wound care, dressings) and critical thinking (e.g., management of the complex multi-injury patient or patient with extensive medical history) which he gained from his years of nursing practice. Paul holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with honours in Physiology from the University of Manitoba and he is a former Registered Nurse. He has successfully adapted and applied principles of human medicine to the equine patients at Champion.
Paul’s also an advocate for multidisciplinary collaboration and strives to involve all members of the equine healthcare team (i.e., veterinarian, farrier, dentist, massage, chiropractic, and Champion physiologists and trainers, etc). He has both toured and studied at state-of-the-art equine facilities overseas where their approach to rehabilitation, training, and conditioning are known to be decades ahead of that in North America. Specifically, he has brought back with him the Eastern emphasis on preventative medicine and the use of cutting-edge research and evidence-based practice which he incorporates into Champion’s patient care plans.
Paul has ridden and worked with horses since a very young age and he presently competes at the provincial and national levels. He is well versed in the various equestrian disciplines with a keen awareness of the mental and physical challenges our equine athletes undergo.
